A few days ago I was watching something on television while my husband sat in his reclining chair reading the paper. There was a scene in the show featuring a middle aged man walking his dog along a street at night. The scene was illustrating the thoughts of married men in a typical suburban neighborhood, and for this scene the narrator said the man was thinking, "Oh crap, my dreams are never going to come true." It was a funny, unexpected line and it made both my husband and I laugh a little. We both knew that while it is...

The trees in Western New York continue to be wrapped in the scrumptious colors of fall. Although it is nearly the end of October some of the maples are still glowing with deep red leaves on the outside powered by golden leaves beneath, enriched by green leaves deeper in toward the trunk. I am a river, life is a river, we are circles and orbs, each of us, all of us, one of us. This summer I found my inner farmer, and she is not within me at all but is connected to me. She is in the form of my sister-in-law and her husband who grew these lovely vibrant vegetables. She is the farmer who works our land, who planted winter wheat last autumn and harvested the...

When I was a little girl in school I joined the Glee Club and one fall season we learned some of the songs from Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. One of my favorites was the "My Favorite Things" song, which we performed during the Christmas show when I was in sixth grade, before my family moved from North Carolina to Los Angeles. Today that song, those lyrics, are on my mind ... Last Friday my husband and I drove down to Bath, New York for the annual pig roast at his nephew's place. His nephew bought a 100...

Before I begin today's post, I wanted to thank any of my readers who left comments last week of condolences for the family of our friend Dave. They are grateful for your messages and thoughts, comforted by the thought that now even strangers know something of the good man they had in their lives. When my brother knew he was dying he started saying, "Life is for living, and you have a lot of that left to do. " He was very firm about it that he did not want any one of us to be mired down in sadness...
